As a teenager, Fabián decides he wants to become a singer.
He lives with his parents, brother, and sister. His dad is an alcoholic, and when he’s drunk, he listens to a variety of music that includes Salsa, Mexican rancheras, Puerto Rican boleros, Argentinian tangos, and Cuban trova. But what Fabián loves is rock music, specifically Guns n’ Roses and Metallica. When he starts voice lessons with the idea of becoming a famous rock vocalist, his voice teacher, an operatic soprano, makes him sing classical music.
From this moment on, he starts a journey that will lead him to places he never dreamed of but ends up lost trying to find his true voice as an artist.
For singer, performer, and writer, Fabián Arciniegas, colours are the composition of life. Everywhere we look we find light illuminating the different shades and colours making our world. To experience colour is to experience difference.
This show invites the audience into a personal exploration of the journey of a classical singer through storytelling and the songs that represent his path as an artist. In Colores, Guns n’ Roses is unapologetically mixed with Mariachi music, and we listen to the music of classical and contemporary composers, including Bizet’s Carmen, Astor Piazzolla Tango, and Stephen Sondheim. Fabián takes us with him on his trip – sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always vibrant to find his voice by mixing all the colours in his life in collaboration with Canadian-New Zealand pianist Claire Harris.
